It is a historic moment at the 2023 MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) as Rema emerged winner of the Best Afrobeats Awards category.

Rema since has been steadily leaving behind a trail of formidable competitors.

Among the list of notable nominees who were Burna Boy with ‘It’s Plenty,’ Davido featuring Musa Key in ‘Unavailable,’ Ayra Starr’s hit ‘Rush,’ Libianca’s ‘People,’ Wizkid collaborating with Ayrra Starr on ‘2 Sugar,’ and Fireboy DML’s ‘Bandana.’, Rema’s talent prevailed, securing his Best Afrobeats award.

Selena Gomez who had featured on Rema’s track that won him the Award has sent her congratulatory message.

She not only thanked Rema for the opportunity to collaborate but also extended her appreciation to the people of Nigeria in general.

In her heartfelt words, Selena Gomez said,

“Thank you so much for believing in me and choosing me to be part of this incredible song that has set records. I’m sending all my love to Nigeria. Thank you.”

Before their VMAs victory, Rema had shared the inspiration behind ‘Calm Down.’

According him he said and I quote

“‘Calm Down’ is about the events that led me to finding love at that time. It all began at a party where I noticed a girl who stood out from the crowd. I mustered the courage to approach her, and we spoke and danced. However, her friends didn’t allow me to get any closer, which dampened the vibe. Nevertheless, when they weren’t around, we stayed in touch and hit it off.”
